Case Profiles #42

Markus Austin

Markus Austin was a local basketball legend, bringing his White Plains High School team to the 1999 Vermont state championship as a sophomore, and holding an all-time record for being a leading scorer. He went on to have a career in basketball and eventually followed that up with becoming a mental health specialist. Unfortunately, on January 22nd, 2017, Markus was shot once in the chest in front of his Montpelier, Vermont apartment. He was shot and killed by Jayveon Caballero, who had sought revenge on him for a fight that broke out the night before at a bar they were both at. DNA evidence led to Caballero’s arrest and eventual sentence to life in prison.

John Bui Tran

28-year-old John Bui Tran was last seen on April 5th, 2005, at a party in Randolph, Massachusetts on Mitchell Street. It seemed as though he vanished into thin air. In the summer of 2004, John had moved to Dorchester, Massachusetts so that he could attend Quincy College as a part-time student studying liberal arts. He lived on Church Street in Dorchester and was working at a pet store in Quincy, and hoped to write screenplays after graduation. A search of a Randolph, Massachusetts home was done in October of 2021, and authorities spent two days digging up the backyard of the home. No new evidence was found. John is a Vietnamese male with black hair and brown eyes and at the time of his disappearance was 5’4 and 130 pounds.
