Episode 15: Adam Emery
On a warm evening in August of 1990, Adam Emery, his wife Elena, and another couple were happily picking up seafood for a nice summer meal. Leaving the parking lot, stuffed with clam chowder and crab cakes, the two pairs were suddenly jolted when another vehicle sideswiped their car. Adam didn’t get a good view of the culprit, but Elena seemed to think she knew exactly who did it: the Ford LTD that was also leaving the parking lot.
In a rage, Adam, who loved his car more than anything, chased after the Ford, so sure that this was the man who broke his left taillight and had simply sped off. Flashing his lights seemed to confuse the driver of the Ford LTD, 20-year-old Jason Bass, and in fear he continued driving. His two passengers remember being scared and also confused. This only escalated when Adam Emery sped up and cut off Jason, who was now atop the lawn of a stranger’s home.
Adam got out of the car to confront Jason, carrying a military-style knife. In fear, Jason attempted to reverse, but was unsuccessful, as Adam had thrown his upper half into the driver side window. He then proceeded to stab Jason twice, once in the arm and once in the chest, right through the heart. Jason died at the scene. It was later discovered that the Ford LTD was not the car that hit Adam Emery.
Two and a half years later, Adam went to trial and was subsequently charged with second-degree murder. Because he had posted bail and the sentencing wasn’t to take place for another 30 days, Adam left the courthouse with his wife, where they devised an elaborate plan. Later that evening, Adam’s car was found abandoned, still running, on a bridge overlooking Narragansett Bay. He was never seen again.
