Episode 104: Everett Simpson

January 5th, 2019 had been a normal day for 23-year-old C.R., who was running errands with her 4-year-old son, J.R., at the Mall of New Hampshire in Manchester, New Hampshire. C.R. was strapping J.R. into his car seat when suddenly an elbow was pushing her into the passenger seat. C.R. looked over to see that a tall, balding man had pushed his way into her car and proceeded to drive away.
Once on the road, the large man explained to C.R. that he had just “escaped” from rehab, and that he was looking for his wife, who he suspected had been cheating on him. He drove C.R. and J.R. up to Vermont, and even had them stop at a house to check and see if his wife was there. Before she knew it, the man began to attempt to sexually assault her on the side of the road. Quick thinking led to her telling the man to take her to a hotel to assault her for safety. He did exactly that before leaving her alone in the hotel room, scarred and terrified.
It was soon after he left that his identity became known: 42-year-old Everett Simpson. He had a long criminal history dating all the way back to 1995. It turned out that the rehab he was staying at was court ordered as a part of a bail agreement from his latest criminal charges. On January 6th, 2019, Everett Simpson was caught after a police pursuit in Pennsylvania.
Like any true psychopath, Everett Simpson represented himself in court. He claimed that he was being portrayed as a monster, and that C.R. consensually went and stayed with him. He even questioned C.R. in court. At the conclusion of his trial, Everett Simpson only had to wait two hours for the jury to deliberate and find him guilty. As of April 2023, he has not yet been given a sentence for how much time he will serve. C.R received a settlement of $400,000 from the state after she filed a lawsuit that contended that the treatment facility and the state did not do enough to locate Everett after he escaped.
