Episode 40: The Suspicious Death of Greg Hart

It was March 13th, 2010, when 23-year-old Greg Hart traveled from his home in Dedham, Massachusetts to visit his friends in Providence, Rhode Island. Greg had just gotten his first job using his degree from University of Massachusetts Amherst, which he graduated from the year before. He was so excited at the potential this new job carried, so he and some friends opted to go to a bar and celebrate for the night.

The exact events that led up to the tragedy are not completely known. What is understood by investigators is that the night seemed relatively normal. A little after 1am, now in the early morning of March 14th, Greg made a call from his iPhone, ironically to someone he was at the bar with. The call lasted 8 minutes and to this day it is unclear what the call was about. A few minutes later, there was a disturbance at the bar, which it is also unknown what happened. Shortly after this, Greg got up and left the bar.

According to his friends, Greg seemed normal when he left. Eventually, the group went back to the apartment they had come from, assuming Greg had walked to a nearby IHOP or had gone back to the apartment. They were alarmed to discover that Greg’s Ford Mustang was still parked where it had been when they left, and his keys were still there. Phone records from one of his friends indicated that the police were called, as well as local hospitals in an attempt to find Greg.

Unfortunately, on March 16th, 2010, around 2:45 pm, Greg’s body was found half-submerged in the Woonasquatucket River in Providence. He had sustained several suspicious injuries, including a smashed eye socket, a broken nose, several cuts on his hands, and bruises all over his legs. An autopsy revealed that his blood-alcohol-content was .25, which was over three times the legal driving limit.

The medical examiner determined Greg’s cause of death was drowning, and with the police, concurred that his death was not due to foul play. This outraged Greg’s family, as they knew he had not accidentally drowned, but rather was beaten up and murdered. The Hart family hired their own private investigators in an attempt to uncover discrepancies from the police investigation and get the truth on their son’s death. To this day, Greg’s family is still fighting to understand what really happened to him.
