Episode 77: Tony Costa

Mary Anne Wysocki and Patricia Walsh

Susan Perry and Sydney Monzon

Born in Cambridge, Massachusetts during World War II, Antone “Tony” Costa was fairly quick to jump into trouble, and began showing signs of sociopathy early in his life. At the age of 17, Tony was arrested for burglary and assault after he broke into the apartment of a teenage girl and attacked her. Not long after his arrest, Tony married a 14-year-old girl and together they had three children. It was around this point that he began to use drugs heavily, such as marijuana, LSD, and even Dilaudid.

The first suspicious disappearances to be tied to Tony occurred in June of 1966, when he supposedly dropped off two hitchhikers, Bonnie Williams and Dianne Federhoff, in California. They never arrived at their destination and were never seen again. In January of 1968, Tony had moved to San Francisco after his marriage fell apart, and began dating a woman named Barbara Spaulding. Not long after meeting Tony- she disappeared. Barbara has never been seen again.

In May of 1968, an 18-year-old girl named Sydney Monzon was seen getting into a car with Tony. This was the last time she was seen alive. That following August, a woman named Susan Perry had become Tony’s lover and moved in with him, only to be reported missing a week later. This was the last time she was seen alive as well.

In January of 1969, 23-year-old friends, Patricia Walsh and Mary Anne Wysocki travelled to Provincetown, Massachusetts, and met Tony Costa. They disappeared the next day. Tony was seen driving Patricia’s distinctive light blue Volkswagen after her disappearance, and was also found to have the girls’ personal belongings in his room at the guest house he was staying at. In February of 1969, three shallow graves in Tony’s personal marijuana garden uncovered the dismembered bodies of Susan Perry, Sydney Monzon, Patricia Walsh, and Mary Anne Wysocki. Tony was subsequently charged with murder and sentenced to life in prison. He hung himself in jail in May of 1974, after having only served 4 years. He was 29 years old.
