Case Profiles #51
Kali Athukorala
Kali Soleil Athukorala was born on August 25th, 2007 in Northampton, Massachusetts. Several months later on December 21st, Kali’s mother, Sandra Clarissa Zemialkowski, took Kali out of her home. Sandra had Kali's father sign a letter of consent to travel outside of the United States, but this was an agreement that the letter would be signed if Kali were to be returned to her home in Massachusetts on January 11th, 2008. Kali was not returned and brought home, and it was eventually agreed upon that Kali and her father could interact over webcam to stay in touch. It was also agreed upon that Sandra would bring her to the U.S. for a one week visit every three months. This was not upheld on Sandra’s end. Sandra’s lawyer said she would not being showing up to court to settle the case, or bring her daughter back to see her father. In early April of 2009, Sandra was divested of her rights of custody to Kali, and full custody was granted to Kali’s father. The court also ordered that Sandra return Kali by 4:00pm on April 13th to the court so the court could hand her over to her father. Sandra never came or returned Kali and her father hasn’t seen her since. It is believed that Kali is at the home of her maternal grandparents, Walter and Clara Violeta Zemialkowski, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Both Walter and Clara are United States citizens, as is Sandra. Sandra is allegedly working as a veterinarian at the Pet Land Veterinary Hospital in Santo Domingo.
Her father Dhanika is trying to arrange for Kali's return to the United States under the terms of the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction, an international civil treaty which the Dominican Republic signed in 2007. The Dominican Republic has refused to take any action as they said Sandra was within her rights when she moved there with Kali as Sandra and Dhanika weren’t married. Kali's disappearance remains unsolved, and she is classified as missing because she is not with her custodial father. Kali is a biracial female with black hair and brown eyes. Her ears are pierced. She has a few scars on her legs and arms. Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of Kali Soleil Athukorala is asked to please call the Belchertown Police Department at 413-323-6685.
