Episode 69: The Murder of Stacey Burns
41-year-old Stacey Burns was a beloved elementary school nurse and mother of five children, and she was very well liked in her community and was known as someone who always had her door open in case someone wanted to come inside and talk.
On the morning of May 10th, 2009, Stacey’s body was found in her bedroom of her Wolfeboro, New Hampshire home by her son who was bringing her breakfast in bed, as it was Mother’s day. She had been stabbed multiple times while two of her children and their friends slept down the hall.
Stacey had just recently gone through a divorce with her husband Ed around Christmas of 2008, but he was never named a suspect. Court documents from the divorce as well as a restraining order Stacey pursued stated that Ed was abusive and controlling and that over the years his behavior escalated as he developed a drinking problem.
Stacey was also casually seeing a man named Jim Vittum, who Stacey’s friends said wanted a serious relationship and did not take her telling him “no” very well. Jim went to the police almost immediately after Stacey’s body was found, telling them, “You've definitely gotta look at me. You've gotta clear me cause I'm gonna be his reasonable doubt. Eddie killed her.” Both Jim and Ed had alibis for the night of Stacey’s murder, and no arrests have ever been made.
Stacey’s children, family and friends are holding out hope that whoever murdered her is caught and brought to justice. Anyone with any information on the murder of Stacey Burns is asked to please call the New Hampshire State Police tip line at (603) 223-3856.
