Case Profiles #18

Alvis Dexter James

On March 30th of 2003, in New Bedford, Massachusetts, an argument broke out at local bar “The Neutral Zone” as a singing competition was taking place. A gunshot was heard, and suddenly 32-year-old Alvis Dexter James, who was singing on stage, fell to the ground. After arriving at the hospital, Alvis died of his injuries. It was later discovered that the manager of the bar had moved Alvis’s injured body to the sidewalk and discarded the bullet casing in order to make the situation appear as it happened elsewhere. The manager was subsequently charged with accessory to murder, however he was not the shooter and the identity of the killer remains unknown. Anyone with any information is asked to please call police at (508) 991-6320.

Raquel Ramirez

On June 30th, 1985, the body of 29-year-old Raquel Ramirez was found underneath Interstate 91 by the Whitehead Highway in Connecticut. Her body was found in the underbrush by a few kids fishing along the Connecticut River who went to dig for worms under the highway. She had been strangled. Raquel was last seen with friends near her home on Ward Street by Wolcott and Park. Unfortunately the lead police officer on her case at the time, Joseph Marrero, was charged with 15 separate counts of sexual assault against a 13-year-old girl. He also wrote notes on Raquel’s case file about going on vacation, and this mishandling of her case arguably played a role in it still being unsolved. Anyone with any information on the murder of Raquel Ramirez is asked to please contact Hartford police at 860-722-TIPS.
