Episode 90: Stephen Marshall

William Elliot and Joseph Gray

Stephen was born in Fort Worth, Texas but moved to Nova Scotia soon after. He moved around multiple times as a child both before and after his parent’s divorce in 1996. When he was 14-years-old he started a website where he expressed his love for weapons, especially guns, and discussed his hatred for women, minorities, school, and authority. At age 15 he was charged with aggravated assault after threatening two children with an AR-15.

Stephen soon developed an obsession with pedophiles and often talked about his deep hatred for them. After moving back to Nova Scotia to stay with his mom and being denied entry to the army, Stephen began researching people on the Maine sex offender registry. After taking down information on 29 different people from the registry, Stephen planned a trip to Houlton, Maine where his dad had recently moved.

Under the guise of visiting his dad, Stephen arrived in Maine for a stay of several days/ After borrowing his dad’s truck and a .45 handgun, Stephen headed off in search of two men: 57-year-old Joseph Gray of Milo, Maine and 24-year-old William Elliot of Corinth, Maine. On April 16th, 2006, Stephen arrived at Joseph’s home where he shot him through a window. Several hours later Stephen arrived at William’s mobile home where he shot him as he opened the door. William’s girlfriend took a photo of the license plate and a manhunt spanning three states and the rest of the day ensued.

After apprehending the bus to Boston Stephen had boarded, police came on board to witness Stephen turn the gun on himself and fire a fatal shot to the head. Although it is still unknown the reasons behind his attacks, police did find his laptop with blog posts about guns and violence. They also found that Stephen had converted to Christianity just before the murders and his laptop contained an animation of Jesus knocking at a door holding an assault rifle.
