Episode 58: Jeffrey Mailhot
Between February 2003 and July 2004, the town of Woonsocket, Rhode Island was facing a puzzling ordeal. Three women had gone missing without a trace, and their loved ones were unsure where to even look. It wasn’t until a brave soul came forward and offered information to the police that helped catch the violent perpetrator.
27-year-old Jocelyn Martel spoke with the Woonsocket Police Department about an encounter she had with a john that turned violent. The man, after paying for sex and bringing her back to his apartment, put Jocelyn in a chokehold and attempted to strangle her. Fighting back, Jocelyn was able to escape. With Jocelyn’s filed complaint, police found another woman with a similar story that started with being paid for sex and ended with escaping a chokehold.
The two women pointed police in the direction of a Woonsocket man named Jeffrey Mailhot. The 33-year-old, unassuming bodybuilder was known to be kind, easy-going and quiet. Little did his neighbors and friends know, Jeffrey had a horrible secret. He had been responsible for the death of three local women: Audrey Harris (33), Christine Dumont (42) and Stacie Goulet (24).
It did not take long for Jeffrey to break down and confess all the details of the murders. He told a gruesome story of strangling his victims, followed by dismembering them in his bathtub, which he said he was inspired to do from an episode of “The Sopranos”. He then took the pieces of these women and placed them in garbage bags, throwing them away in different dumpsters throughout town. His arrest and confession took place just 10 days after Stacie’s gruesome murder, so police were able to recover her body in the local dump. Audrey and Christine’s remains have never been found.
Jeffrey Mailhot was given three life sentences for the murder of the three women, and sentenced to two 10-year terms for the assault charges. He remains in prison to this day.
