Episode 95: The Penthouse Double Murders

On May 5th, 2017, two doctors were found brutally murdered in their luxury condo in South Boston, Massachusetts. 39-year-old Lina Bolaños and her fiancé, 48-year-old Richard Field, had lived on the 11th floor of the Macallen Building in a luxury penthouse. Richard had helped hugely in founding North Shore Pain Management, and Lina was a pediatric anesthesiologist and worked at Massachusetts Eye and Ear.

On that night of May 5th, a friend of the two doctors received a text from Richard that there was a gunman in their building. Phone records later showed that someone had called 911 eight times from Richard’s phone, all of the calls lasting no longer than two seconds. The friend notified police at 8:38pm and ten minutes later law enforcement arrived on scene and entered the unit. They fired shots at a man who appeared to be holding a gun and he was taken into custody and to the hospital.

Once police were able to further survey the scene they found the two doctors with their throats slit and their hands bound with duct tape. There were also messages scrawled and graffitied on the walls, with the words "payback" and "he killed my wife," written out in large letters. Lina had been stabbed 24 times, while Richard was stabbed a single time in the throat.

30-year-old Bampumim Teixeira, who used to work as a concierge at the building the couple lived in, was the intruder. He told police that he was having an affair with Lina and Richard had walked in on them, stabbing Lina to death out of rage and forcing Bampumim to kill Richard in self defense. This was proven quickly to be untrue.

During his trial Bampumim was removed from the courtroom on two separate occasions for mocking and taunting the victim’s families as well as threatening to harm the prosecutor’s wife. He continued to deny involvement and came up with outlandish claims as to how the murders took place.

Bampumim was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences as well as additional time for kidnapping, armed robbery and home invasion. He remains in prison.
